A 7.8-magnitude quake that struck the southern Philippines on Monday has killed at least one person and injured four others while collapsing “a number of buildings”, according to police.“Many buildings were affected, but I cannot enumerate them now because we are busy with ongoing rescues,” Master Sergeant Robert Dagon of the General Santos City police said.“A number of buildings collapsed. Some houses also collapsed.”Tsunami warnings were issued after the quake, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said. GFZ had earlier pegged the earthquake at 8.2.The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat to the earthquake. The geophysics agencies of the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia issued similar warnings.The offshore quake hit at a depth of 35km (22 miles) about 24km west of Mindanao’s Sarangani province, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at 7.37am.
