An earthquake has been felt in Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh, causing brief concern among residents.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), a France-based earthquake monitoring agency, the tremor measured 5.6 in magnitude on Sunday.

The agency said the earthquake's epicentre was located in Bhutan.

According to Bhutan time -- which is the same as Bangladesh time -- the earthquake struck at 11:36pm.

EMSC said the epicentre was located 19km north-northeast of Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km.
