With an aim to instil morality, good behavior, and social responsibility in school children, the Karnataka government has introduced a value-education module from classes 1 to 10 in all schools this academic year. The decision comes in the wake of the State Education Policy (SEP) Commission, in its report to the State government, recommending teaching value education in schools. The Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) has distributed bilingual activity books containing 10 ‘core values’ and ‘sub-values’ for each class. There are a total of 234 such activities across all classes. The values incorporated include respect, dignity of labour, honesty and integrity, emotional intelligence and resilience, empathy and compassion, diversity, equity and inclusion, gender equality, scientific temper and creative imagination, sustainable living and environmental awareness, civic responsibility and safety. These topics will be integrated into all subjects, allowing them to be taught alongside the regular curriculum rather than separately. “Instead of teaching value education as a separate subject, steps have been taken to integrate it with all subjects. This approach is an easy way for teachers to instil values in students while teaching lessons. Specific activities have been organised according to the syllabus of each class,” said an official from DSERT.While value education will not be taught as a separate subject, the circular says it should amount to one period a week. Over a lakh teachers have already been trained for the module. Teachers are advised to continuously observe the positive changes in students’ adoption of values and their behavior after teaching value education. Additionally, teachers are required to record this information under the co-curricular activities section of the Comprehensive Progress Report. Published - June 07, 2026 07:50 pm IST
