ANC SG Fikile Mbalula arriving at the party's eThekwini rally flanked by Thabani Nyawose, Mike Mabuyakhulu and Dickson Masemola.
As the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) in KwaZulu-Natal teeters on the brink of collapse, the ANC has assured its partners of support.
Speaking at a party rally in eThekwini on Sunday, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula assured the IFP and the DA that the ANC is still in full support of the arrangement. Mbalula said his party has observed the problems at the NFP and its potential impact on the GPU, however, the ANC has not changed its position.
“We are still part of the GPU and we have not taken a decision that suggests otherwise. The NFP problem is just a sparkle and what is happening is not unique to KwaZulu-Natal, it happens everywhere... so is the nature of coalitions,” said Mbalula.
His comments put to bed for now speculation that ANC in the province might opt to work with the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP)-led coalition following the NFP’s withdrawal from the 2024 arrangement.
