LAS VEGAS — On a night when he was so locked in that he knocked Maurice Richard out of the NHL record book and started officially etching his name into the Conn Smythe Trophy, there was only one thing Mitch Marner missed: That the Carolina Hurricanes sent out backup goalie Brandon Bussi to start the third period of Saturday’s game instead of Frederik Andersen. It became an important detail when Marner found himself coming down on Bussi with a penalty shot attempt four minutes later. Bussi catches with his right hand, and for the first time all night, Marner was knocked out of the zone.“I really didn’t notice they switched their goalie, and I didn’t notice he’s an offhander, as well,” Marner said. “So, I had a lot of different thoughts kind of going through my mind when I was going on that penalty shot. Just trying to shoot it quickly or trying to find a play.”He went for the backhand deke, and Bussi didn’t bite, keeping him from scoring a fourth straight goal in a Stanley Cup Final game that won’t soon be forgotten by anyone who watched it.For Marner, the game will almost certainly go down as the signature moment of a career already on a Hall of Fame trajectory. He scored three straight goals for the Vegas Golden Knights during an electric stretch of 6 minutes and 10 seconds, besting Richard’s mark of 6:21 set 29 years ago for the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history. He also added an assist on Tomáš Hertl’s goal in that second period to record the first four-point period in Cup Final history. And, when the night ended with Vegas’ 5-4 win in double overtime, he had an astounding 10 shots on goal — just the sixth player with that many in a single game in the NHL’s championship series.
