June is Pride Month
As June kicks off, members of the LGBTIQ+ community celebrate Pride Month but do you know why this month is celebrated?
LGBTIQ+ is an umbrella acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer.
The + signifies a wide spectrum of other sexual orientations, gender identities, and sex characteristics that are not explicitly covered by the primary letters.
June is globally observed as Pride Month to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City. South Africans join in this global solidarity, reflecting on the historical milestones and struggles of the queer community worldwide.
