The country's eurosceptic government and public opinion still firmly reject adopting the EU's single currency
PRAGUE – Czech President Petr Pavel has argued that the country should be prepared to abandon its national currency if it becomes an obstacle to economic development and European influence.
Speaking at the reVize Česka conference in Prague last Monday, Pavel delivered one of his strongest endorsements yet of joining the euro.
“If the Czech koruna was preventing our development, we should abandon our attachment to it,” Pavel said, arguing that membership of the eurozone would give Prague a stronger voice in EU decision-making.
“The very fact that our economy is significantly interconnected with the eurozone should lead us to conclude that it is clearly better to be at the table where decisions are made than to sit outside the door and then have to deal with those decisions afterwards.”
