ANC veteran Dr Nkosazana-Dlamini has reflected on her traumatic memories of 1976, expressing her profound grief upon learning that apartheid authorities had shot at thousands of Black students in Soweto.
ANC veteran and former minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has shared her harrowing memories of 1976, detailing the deep sorrow she felt when she first heard that apartheid police opened fire on thousands of Black students protesting in Soweto, killing numerous young people and triggering what is now known as the Soweto uprising.
The incidents happened on June 16, 1976, when students took to the streets to peacefully protest the apartheid government's mandate to enforce Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.
The 12-year-old Hector Peterson was one of the first students killed during the protest.
His tragic death gained global attention due to a haunting news photograph taken by The World newspaper photographer Sam Nzima.
