The Southern Railway has planned to add another parking yard at the Perungudi railway station of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) as the present parking space is being fully utilised. With the MRTS services being extended from Velachery to the St. Thomas Mount railway station, there has been a rise in commuters using the service. The Perungudi station, one of the gateways to the Information Technology corridor, has similarly seen an increase in vehicles using its parking space. As the space is also utilised by commercial and private vehicles on a monthly basis, the parking yard is full on all days.Commuters who bring their own vehicles hence struggle to find a parking spot.S. Murali Sundar, a resident of Taramani who regularly boards the MRTS services at Perungudi station, said the parking yard is mostly full. Regular commuters have to leave the vehicles unprotected outside the station. A huge vacant space belonging to the railway station is available, but commercial vehicles and trucks are parked in that space, he said. Commuters said it is not only important that vehicles are parked safely, but also in a protective environment under the shed, which is occupied by private cars. The Southern Railway, having vast vacant spaces on both sides of the station, can use them by developing parking yards and earn revenue, Mr. Murali Sundar added. Commuters said the development of parking spaces on both sides of the Velachery railway station has helped commuters park their vehicles safely there.A senior official of the Southern Railway said an additional space adjacent to the present parking yard, which is illegally occupied by commercial vehicles, will be developed, for which a tender will be called soon. On commercial vehicles parking at the station, the official said monthly passes are available for the public and they are making use of them. Published - June 07, 2026 05:00 am IST
