A Delhi court on Saturday ordered the release of Congress women’s wing chief Alka Lamba on probation for one year on the condition of “good conduct” following her conviction for assaulting police personnel during a protest at Jantar Mantar in 2024.Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwani Panwar of the Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order, observing that the president of the All India Mahila Congress is a “first-time offender and there is no prior criminal conviction on record”. Lamba was convicted last month for offences including obstructing public servants while performing their duties, assaulting government officials, violating a duly promulgated order, and causing obstruction in a public place.“This court is releasing the convict Alka Lamba on probation of good conduct,” read the court order. Lamba has been directed to furnish a bond of ₹1 lakh along with one surety of the same amount. She must maintain peace and demonstrate “good behaviour” for a period of one year, the court said.The judge said the prosecution had not presented any grounds for denying Lamba the benefit of probation.
