A United States doctor who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been discharged from a German hospital after recovering from the highly infectious and often deadly disease.
The Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin confirmed on Saturday that the patient, a 39-year-old American surgeon working with a Christian missionary organisation, was released after 17 days of intensive medical care.
The hospital said the doctor and his five family members, who had been placed under quarantine as high-risk contacts, were all in “good health” and cleared to leave the facility following final medical examinations.
The patient, identified in reports as Dr. Peter Stafford, had been working in eastern DRC when he reportedly treated an Ebola patient before the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, 2026.
