A Gurgaon-based CEO recently revealed one of the most bitter truths of Indian marriages. Taking to X, entrepreneur Jasveer Singh explained why big income gaps between spouses can lead to abuse of power and problematic power dynamics. He stated: “Most women dream of marrying a rich man. That dream is a cage with good interiors…”He then went on to explain that a man earning Rs 1 crore will always wonder what his wife earning Rs 10 lakh is bringing to the table. Even if he doesn’t vocalise such feelings, they will always be at the back of his mind. “The person with more money has more power. The person with more power sets the rules. That’s human nature. Here's what nobody tells women when they're busy dreaming about rich husbands. Money is leverage. And leverage determines who adjusts, who shrinks, and who accepts…” he wrote. He then cautioned that other aspects of marriage such as physical attraction fades or normalises over the years. He then advised women to marry men who need them not just want them. — jasveer10 (@jasveer10) “The income gap between husband and wife should never cross 3x. After that it's not a marriage. It's a man keeping a dependent and calling it commitment…” he concluded.Singh’s tweet triggered a heated debate. One X user accused him of making marriage sound too transactional. Another entrepreneur accused him of blatant misogyny. “a woman is being told to make herself indispensable to survive her own marriagenot loved. not chosen. needed. like a utility bill he hasn’t cancelled yet…” she wrote. Another quipped that he was looking forward to becoming the house husband of a rich wife. However, one X user agreed with him. “Whether this is misogynistic or not is secondary. He is right. Power dynamics always exist in marriages and even more so when one partner holds more cards. If you want to marry rich, you need to be rich too or be in a position of power that ensures you will not be browbeaten..” the comment read. Singh is the CEO of a matchmaking app. He has an MBA from INT Ghaziabad.
