The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and the Kochi Corporation will jointly conduct an inspection to assess drinking water quality on Monday (June 8, 2026) in the wake of alleged water contamination in three divisions of the Corporation.Around 60 residents of the Kadavanthra, Panampilly Nagar and Perumanoor divisions reportedly complained of diarrhoea and vomiting after allegedly consuming drinking water supplied by the KWA. Councillors representing the divisions alleged that contamination of the KWA’s water supply was behind the incident. The civic and health authorities conducted awareness campaigns and initiated chlorination in the region.Perumanoor councillor K.X. Francis said tests conducted on water samples collected from taps in households where residents had fallen ill detected the presence of coliform bacteria. “More than 60 people fell ill and sought medical attention. While a water sample collected by me tested positive for the bacteria, subsequent tests conducted by the KWA returned negative results,” he said.K. Aiyeswareyan, an affected resident of Koparambil Lane, said he had to hospitalise his 73-year-old mother for more than four days and that it was only after more people in the locality started complaining that he realised the source of the infection was the drinking water.Panampilly Nagar division councillor Antony Painuthara said that, while the situation was largely under control, at least two fresh cases were reported on Saturday. “People began falling sick around eight days ago. We have advised residents to completely drain and clean their water tanks. Water is also being supplied through tankers to those in need,” he said. However, KWA authorities have denied allegations of water contamination. “All the samples taken by us for testing from our pipeline network have returned negative for the presence of any bacteria. Further, the allegation that the recent work carried out to repair a leak near the Shipyard region caused the contamination does not hold ground, as that pipeline does not supply water to this area,” an official said. The official said the KWA could not be held responsible for contamination in consumers’ water tanks. Samples will be collected again on Monday as part of the continuing inspection of the affected sites. “We will take samples only up to the meter point,” the official added.
