The Oncology Department of King George Hospital (KGH) has launched free immunotherapy for lung cancer patients, becoming the first government hospital in Andhra Pradesh to offer the treatment under a clinical trial programme.Patients aged between 16 and 65 years who are diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer can now receive immunotherapy in combination with chemotherapy as part of a year-long clinical trial, KGH Superintendent Dr. I. Vani.Dr. K. Shilpa, Head of the Medical Oncology Department, will serve as the principal investigator for the clinical trial. A single cycle of the treatment costs around ₹4 lakh for every three weeks. The patients need to be administered one dose of immunotherapy every three weeks, amounting to 17 cycles over a year. Under the clinical trial at the KGH, the eligible patients will receive the treatment free of cost, she said.Dr. Vani said that KGH was the first hospital in Andhra Pradesh to provide free immunotherapy for lung cancer patients and the only hospital in the State currently undertaking such a clinical trial.
