Maltese Cross finished in second while James J. Braddock came in third.‌The 1.5-mile race at Epsom Downs Racecourse, famous for its dramatic initial climb and the sweeping downhill stretch at Tattenham Corner, again proved challenging with the shocking weather also not helping matters.‌However, Christmas Day took the lead with a few furlongs remaining and was able to hold on with King Charles and Queen Camilla watching on.‌Speaking to ITV Racing after the win, Whelan said: "They just told me to keep it simple, when he is out in front he never gets it wrong. The horse has done it so easy, he loves the ground and it just felt so effortless for him."My Mum, Dad and girlfriend are here, I can't thank them enough, the whole team, everybody, I've met friends for life, it hasn't sunk in."‌When asked when he realised he was going to win, he added: "When we were running down the hill, I knew I had loads left. He just took it all on his stride. He is a credit to anyone who has anything to do with him."There will be more to follow on this breaking news story and Mirror Sport will bring you the very latest updates, pictures and video as soon as possible. Please check back regularly for updates on this developing story.Article continues belowFollow us on Google News, Flipboard, Apple News, Twitter, Facebook or visit The Mirror homepage.Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.‌The DerbyEpsom Downs Racecourse
