The CPI(M) has said it will fight the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank loan scam case legally after a PMLA court issued summons to 28 accused in connection with alleged irregularities, even as the BJP and Congress stepped up demands for accountability.CPI(M) Thrissur district secretary K.V. Abdul Khader alleged that central agencies were targeting the party with political motives. “We will face the case legally. The Enforcement Directorate has carried out campaigns against the CPI(M) with political interests. District leaders have been made accused in a case in which the party has no role,” he said.He further alleged that the move was part of a broader attempt to weaken opposition parties. “The attempt by the BJP government and its agencies to trap Opposition parties in cases is not healthy for democracy. We will not succumb to the actions of central agencies. Even if required, we will approach higher courts to secure justice,” he added.Meanwhile, the BJP demanded that the CPI(M) apologise to the public and that leaders named in the case step down. BJP State vice-president K.K. Anish Kumar said the developments in court strengthened the allegations raised in the ED’s chargesheet. He said the CPI(M), which had earlier termed the allegations politically motivated, should now respond to the situation. He also called for the resignation of leaders named as accused, including MLA A.C. Moideen and MP K. Radhakrishnan, stating that they should step down on moral grounds while the legal process continues. The Congress also joined the attack, with Thrissur DCC president Joseph Tajet stating that corruption could not be covered up through political arguments. “If there is any sense of morality, K. Radhakrishnan and A.C. Moideen should resign,” he said.Mr. Tajet alleged that the irregularities had caused losses to ordinary depositors and called for a comprehensive investigation into the case. He also claimed that those responsible for the alleged wrongdoing must be held accountable. Published - June 06, 2026 08:23 pm IST
