The group described the demand as a gross misrepresentation of Islam, insisting that kidnapping, terrorism and extortion have no place in the religion.

The Muslim Community of Oyo State has distanced itself from terrorists who reportedly demanded the implementation of Sharia law as part of conditions for the release of teachers and pupils abducted from schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The group described the demand as a gross misrepresentation of Islam, insisting that kidnapping, terrorism and extortion have no place in the religion.

The development comes amid growing anxiety over the fate of the victims abducted during coordinated attacks on three schools in Esinele, Yawota and Alawusa communities on May 15.

The kidnappers were said to have demanded the release of detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, two Hilux vehicles and the implementation of Sharia-related law before releasing the captives.
