As the best player in Leeds United’s team and a 25-year-old leader, it was inevitable that rival clubs would be asking about Ethan Ampadu’s availability. And yet, within two weeks of the season’s conclusion, he has committed the best years of his career to Elland Road.Leeds announced their captain’s new four-year contract on June 4. It is a statement of intent in a week when the club has set its stall out for the important summer ahead. There was confirmation of redevelopment work commencing at Elland Road and the small matter of an away kit launch, which positions Leeds among the elite clubs Adidas works with. Ampadu, though, has stolen the show. The Wales international was the first signing of Daniel Farke’s tenure in July 2023 and he has been instrumental since. Ampadu grew and developed over the course of 2025-26, proving he can cut it in the Premier League, while leading the team, on and off the field, through the ups and downs of a massive challenge to survive relegation.Securing Ampadu’s future was of paramount importance, internally and externally. Sources with knowledge of the negotiations, who like all of those spoken to for this article, unless otherwise noted, spoke under the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, explained this was a summer priority for Leeds executives. The deal shows the outside world United have the ambition and resources to retain their best players. On Thursday, as he announced the news, chairman Paraag Marathe told reporters, The Athletic included, just how important the captain was to the club. He said: “There is no intent, for our core group, to move on from them because they had career seasons.“Take Ethan, for example. It was never a contemplation, for a New York second, we were going to do anything other than try to extend him and keep him here for a long time.”The contract has been months in the making. Sporting director Adam Underwood led the talks for Leeds, and a first outline of their intentions was communicated at the start of 2026.Ethan Ampadu led Leeds to the Championship title in the 2024-25 season (Harry Trump/Getty Images)As with so many contract negotiations, the discussions developed over that period, instructed by what was going on in games and the route it seemed the season was taking for Leeds and Ampadu. The midfielder’s performances continued to improve, backed by consistency, much in the same way the club appeared to be heading to safety.Understandably, neither party could discuss anything with certainty until the club’s Premier League status was confirmed with West Ham United’s loss to Arsenal on May 10. From there, sources say the frequency of conversations picked up.The initial expectation had been a resolution may be found once Ampadu concluded his Wales duties, but the process accelerated, and he eventually signed the deal, remotely, on June 1.Sources close to Ampadu acknowledge there were enquiries from clubs higher up the Premier League, with bigger budgets, who wanted conversations about his future. Leeds also expected offers to come shortly, according to people with knowledge of the situation. He had one year left on his deal, though the club had the option to trigger an extension to 2028, but the player and club knew this was the right time to secure his future.Ampadu and his representatives have been impressed, throughout the process, by the professionalism and proactive, forward-thinking stance taken by Underwood et al. Ampadu’s camp knew his next contract would dictate where he spends the peak years of his career. It was about more than football on the pitch. The infrastructure around the club, Elland Road’s redevelopment and the ambitions for the regeneration of the wider area all played into Ampadu’s decision.
