The collapse of a tour company is believed to have left dozens of Kiwi holidaymakers counting the cost.

John Downing and Lena Buck, of Christchurch, were already holidaying in Korea and eagerly awaiting the itinerary to arrive from tour company AVG.

“We didn’t even know what hotel to go to,” Downing, 71, said.

That itinerary arrived on May 26, a day before the couple were due to start their 19-day trip to China.

About six hours later they received an email from the liquidator of the Australian-based parent company AVG Travels PTY Ltd, “to say they were out of business”.
