Demonstrators rally outside the Supreme Court in Washington, DC, during deliberations that led to its decision in May that mifepristone could continue to be prescribed.
The US Food and Drug Administration has launched a safety study of the abortion pill mifepristone, a step that could pave the way for the Trump administration to restrict how it is distributed and used, the Wall Street Journal has reported.
The FDA has said mifepristone continues to be safe and effective for its intended purpose when used as directed.
A spokesperson for the US Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA, rejected reporting that a study was just being started, saying that the agency "has been actively working on a science-based safety review of the mifepristone REMS for months".
