Dear Editor,
Now that the celebration of the 64th Independence Day has come to an end, I write with great sadness regarding the incident involving two Samoan men who travelled all the way to Vietnam to conduct a killing job and are now charged by Vietnamese police with murder. This incident raises serious concerns that extend far beyond an isolated criminal incident.
It is now clear that the intended victim was another Samoan man who resides overseas and is linked to an underground criminal network operating across Australia and possibly across the Pacific region. This matter should now be treated as a potential case of transnational organised crime.
It is deeply troubling to consider the possibility that young Samoans may have been recruited, financed, or manipulated into carrying out violent acts on behalf of criminal interests.
The Samoa Police Service, especially the Transnational Crime Unit (TCU), should conduct a thorough investigation and should move at a fast pace, working closely with regional and international law enforcement partners to determine who organised and funded the travel of these young men and whether broader criminal networks were involved. Investigators should follow all available evidence, including financial transactions, communications, travel arrangements, and any individuals who may have facilitated or directed the alleged crime.
