Concerns have mounted over Indonesia’s diplomatic mechanisms and its bureaucratic shortcomings, following a widely circulated claim that over a dozen proposed foreign ambassadors have been stymied for months in their efforts to present their letters of credence to President Prabowo Subianto. The claim, first posted on X by former Indonesian ambassador to the United States Dino Patti Djalal on Tuesday, said that 17 foreign envoys have waited for up to eight months to convey their credentials to Indonesia’s government, drawing warnings from experts that such holdups would undermine the country’s diplomatic standing.
Speaking to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday, Dino said that the post, which has gained nearly 5 million views, was based on recent pieces of information he received from multiple envoys who have been unable to present their letters of credence despite having followed proper procedures.
One proposed ambassador, Dino said, without naming names, has been waiting for eight months, a wait time the envoy had never experienced before.
