Enrique Riquelme says that should he win the Real Madrid presidential election his prospective sporting director Raul Gonzalez Blanco will ask Jurgen Klopp to lead the club’s “sporting project” from the bench. In a statement released on Friday, Riquelme said that he would use the allure of Madrid to entice Klopp should he beat Florentino Perez in Sunday’s club election, despite acknowledging the German has turned down offers for a return to management before. The 37-year-old renewable energy entrepreneur has also said he would sign Erling Haaland if he is elected, a claim which Manchester City are considering legal action over.On May 26, Riquelme claimed that his team had “closed a deal” for the club’s new manager prior to his candidacy, saying that the potential coach is already in charge of a “team right now”.However, a new statement released on Friday read: “For the bench, from the moment he joined us, Raul has put forward a single name. We are speaking of one of the finest coaches of our time. But, above all, we are speaking of a leader capable of restoring Real Madrid. That coach is Jurgen Klopp.“We know that Klopp has publicly stated that he has no intention of returning to the dugout in the short term, and that he has turned down numerous offers. There are great clubs, but there is only one Real Madrid.“If the members grant me their trust this Sunday, on Monday (June 8), Raul will contact Klopp to convey to him personally our sporting project and our wish for him to be the one to lead, from the bench. A new era for Real Madrid.”In March, former Liverpool manager Klopp left the door open to a return to the dugout, saying he was “not quite finished as a coach yet”.The 58-year-old has been Red Bull’s global head of soccer since January 2025 but has been consistently linked to coaching jobs following his exit from Liverpool in 2024. Having previously been linked to Real Madrid this year, he told The Athletic that he is “completely at peace with where I am” and doesn’t want to be anywhere else. This is the latest bold claim from Riquelme. He has previously made other campaign promises announcing former Madrid players Raul and Fernando Hierro as part of his would-be team, in addition to Wednesday evening’s announcement that Norway international Haaland would be his star signing should he oust longtime incumbent Perez.Riquelme also stated that Rodri, Haaland’s City team-mate, would move to the Santiago Bernabeu if he wins.Perez has been the club’s president since 2000 and is considered a heavy favourite to remain in post. The 79-year-old used his appearance on Spanish TV show Horizonte on Thursday night to claim he would bid at least €150m for a mystery player if his club’s socios vote him back in as president this weekend.
