Fox Sports World Cup analyst Stu Holden thinks one of the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup has an edge over the others, and it’s not the team he used to play for.“I feel more bullish that Mexico will win their group than the U.S. right now,” the former USMNT midfielder told reporters Friday. “I’ve already earmarked the round of 16. It could be Mexico against England. If Mexico wins their group, I actually have them beating a team like England, which would put them in that quarterfinal type spot that I hope the U.S. get to.”Mexico defeated Serbia 5-1 in Toluca, Mexico on Thursday, the fifth straight match without a loss for coach Javier Aguirre’s side. Aguirre, who replaced Gerardo “Tata” Martino after Mexico crashed out of the group stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has sought to strengthen the mentality of his players ahead of the 2026 tournament, which is co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.“This is a country that is all in for their team at the World Cup,” Holden said of Mexico. “There’s no more booing or jeering. There’s full support. I’ve played in that stadium. I could see England losing there and that’s actually where I have England going out.”Mexico will open the World Cup in Mexico City against South Africa on June 11. The famed Estadio Azteca (to be referred to as Mexico City Stadium this summer) has long been a fortress of sorts for the Mexican national team. Since it opened its doors in 1966, Mexico has only lost two official matches at the ground. Mexico will play two games at the Estadio Azteca and one at Guadalajara’s Estadio Akron.Aguirre coached La Liga side RCD Mallorca for two seasons from 2022 to 2024. Holden, a co-owner of the team, knows the veteran Mexico manager well, and he believes Aguirre will provide the leadership Mexico needs in the World Cup.
