Turkey is near both conflicts, bordering Iran and situated across the Black Sea from Ukraine.NATO could endorse some of the green-lit projects, including the one in Turkey, at a July 7-8 summit in Ankara, the people said.A NATO official said discussions on enhancing NATO’s Fuel Supply Chain, including the NATO Pipeline System, are ongoing. NATO continues to ensure that it has access to the fuels it needs to maintain operational readiness, the official said.Funding for project infrastructure would come out of US$28 billion earmarked for the expansion and drawn from the common NATO budget, one of the people said, adding that the countries in which the projects are built would cover the maintenance.The 10,000-kilometre (6,200-mile) network links military bases, civil airports, depots and other infrastructure across 12 countries. It is designed to meet spikes in fuel demand during military operations, particularly for airlift and aerial refuelling, according to NATO.Other proposals include extending the pipeline network into the territories of eastern European allies and building a US$1.2 billion direct fuel link between Turkey and Romania.
