Ontario’s highest court has upheld the release of lawyer Deepak Paradkar while he awaits an extradition hearing to the United States to face charges connected to a global drug trafficking operation.

The most serious charge facing the 63-year-old Thornhill-based lawyer is that he conspired with others to murder a confidential source who was assisting the authorities in their prosecution against alleged drug kingpin Ryan Wedding and his 15 associates. The informant — whom the Star has identified as Jonathan Acebedo-Garcia — was gunned down at a restaurant in Medellin, Colombia, in January 2025.
