VIBE Lineage is an interview series with the heirs of Black excellence. Now that their legendary predecessors have gained high regard in their own right, these younger kin are blazing their own trails.
In an era when every move a celebrity’s child makes is dissected, debated, and often dismissed before the work can speak for itself, one 16-year-old Atlanta artist is quietly charting a course of his own. The comparisons are inevitable. There’s the famous surname. The dreadlocks. The slight frame. Even traces of a familiar nasally tone that instantly remind listeners of one of hip-hop’s most recognizable voices. Butt spend a few minutes with Lil Novi, and a different picture emerges—one less concerned with carrying a legacy than creating his own.
While his father, Grammy Award-winning rap icon Lil Wayne, has a persona often viewed as larger-than-life, Lil Novi is approaching music with a patience that feels increasingly rare. He understands the assumptions attached to his name. Whereas his father’s generation was lauded for getting it out of the mud, offspring like himself and North West, daughter of Kanye West, are viewed within the zeitgeist as being born with a silver microphone in hand. However, he simply refuses to let them define him.
