Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen have been appointed as national joint secretaries to assist him,” Serampore Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee said after the meeting.The announcement follows a high-level meeting of the party’s National Working Committee at Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata on Friday.The move comes days at a time several TMC leaders have questioned Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership.On Wednesday, West Bengal assembly speaker Rathindra Bose recognized a bloc of 58 rebel TMC lawmakers as the principal opposition party in the 294-member state assembly.Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha—who were expelled by the TMC on Monday—were named leader and deputy leader of the opposition, respectively. There is speculation that the party could face a vertical split in Parliament too.Kalyan Banerjee said TMC’s state committee has been reconstituted with a series of new appointments. “Former cabinet minister Chandrima Bhattacharya has been appointed the new state president, replacing Subrata Bakshi, who is unwell,” he added.Additionally, Sajda Ahmed, Mamata Thakur, Swati Khandekar, and Nayana Bandyopadhyay have been appointed state vice presidents. Babar Ali, Pulak Roy, Ashima Patra, Aroop Biswas, and Rajib Banerjee take over as state general secretaries. The party has also overhauled its youth, women, trade union, and farmers’ wings.Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rahul Sinha claimed the TMC will collapse. “The TMC will disintegrate in the next few days. It is just a matter of time before Mamata Banerjee is left all alone,” Sinha said.
