Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has set an ambitious target for India’s seafood sector, aiming to scale exports to $30 billion over the next five years.Addressing the national workshop on seafood exports in Visakhapatnam on Friday, Mr. Goyal lauded the resilience and integrity of the nation’s fishing community, noting their adherence to international standards and practices.Highlighting the sector’s robust growth, Mr. Goyal noted that seafood production reached 164 lakh tonnes by 2024. The export value, which stood at $5 billion historically, had surged to $8.5 billion in the current financial year, reflecting a growth rate of 25% to 30%. He attributed this trajectory to the governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which facilitated comprehensive development across all sectors over the past two years.“India currently exports premium-quality seafood to 38 countries, a footprint the government intends to expand significantly. Central to this strategy is the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which provides the framework for modernising infrastructure and enhancing productivity,” the Union Minister said.Emphasising that Indian marine products must reach every corner of the globe, Mr. Goyal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering those who depend on nature for their livelihood. “By leveraging institutional support and sustainable practices, India is positioned to become a dominant, high-quality player in the global seafood market,” he said.
