Kanniyakumari District Local Bodies Employees Association, affiliated with CITU, submitted a petition at the Collectorate on Thursday seeking an increase in minimum wages paid to Amma Unavagam employees.According to the petition, most of the women employed at Amma Unavagam operating in the district were deserted by their husbands. The minimum wages for these employees was last revised in 2021, when it was increased to ₹325 per day and has not been revised since. The petitioners added that the cost of living has risen considerably in the last five years, leading to higher educational and medical expenses for children. They urged the government to increase the minimum wages to ₹700.S.C. Stalindhas, district secretary, CITU said that the district has two Amma Unavagam under Nagercoil corporation functioning in Vadasery and Asaripallam and one Amma Unavagam each is functioning in Thuckalay, Marthandam and Colachel. He pointed out that employees working in Thuckalay Amma Unavagam are paid only ₹250 per day and urged the authorities to revise their wages and bring them on par with employees at other branches in the district.Mr. Stalindhas observed, “It has become extremely difficult for these women to support their families amid the rising cost of living,” reiterating the demand to raise the minimum wage to ₹700 per day.The petition also highlighted the disparity in wages paid to employees at Amma Unavagam in Thuckalay and sought immediate corrective action.
