A consultative meeting on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2006, which came into force on April 1, 2026, was chaired by District Collector C. Dinesh Kumar here at the Collectorate in Krishnagiri.A multi-level governance structure on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2006 in all urban and rural local body administrations must be set up as per the orders of the Supreme Court.The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, Section 5, empowers authorities with the implementation of its guidelines and the same empowers District Collectors with the enforcement of amended Solid Waste Management Rules within a year.The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 replaced Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, bringing all establishments under the jurisdiction of all urban and rural local body administrations in its ambit.The review meeting entailed consultation on the setting up of a Special Cell for the implementation of the Rules, periodic review of the capacity building of local bodies in the enforcement of the Rules.Any violation of the Rules will call for action against the establishments through mandatory compliances, according to the administration.All houses, offices, educational establishments and non-hazardous industrial units will fall under the ambit of the Rules. Hazardous units, including hospital biomedical waste, e-waste, battery discards will fall outside the purview of the SWM Rules, 2026.Mr. Dinesh Kumar instructed the local bodies to ensure compliance with the SWM Rules.
