It's laughter they’re after.Disney Parks shared new details Thursday about its upcoming “Monsters, Inc.”- themed land at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, revealing that the new area will be called Monstropolis.Monstropolis is currently under construction, replacing the former Muppets Courtyard area, and does not yet have an opening date. Its story is set right after where Pixar's 2001 animated hit left off, when monsters Sully and Mike Wazowski discovered that human laughter generates more power than screams.“The experience is built around H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for ‘Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice,’ a citywide celebration that brings humans into the monster world for the first time,” a Disney news release states. The centerpiece of Monstropolis will be a suspended roller coaster that hangs riders beneath an overhead track and features the first-ever vertical lift in a Disney park. The ride will plunge guests into the movie's iconic door vault chase scene, racing through a massive warehouse packed with hanging doors that monsters use to travel to the human world.Monstropolis, shown in this concept art, will be the name of the new Monsters, Inc. area coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida (Disney)An official opening date for Monstropolis has not yet been announced (Disney)Beyond the coaster, guests will be able to explore familiar spots straight from the movie, including Harryhausen's, the restaurant where Mike and Celia went on their date, and the Glob Theater. The land will also offer opportunities to meet monster residents, browse themed shops, and enjoy food and drinks inspired by the franchise.Disney first announced the “Monsters, Inc.” project during the 2024 D23 fan event, where actor Billy Crystal, who voices Michael Wazowski, surprised fans with news.In Thursday's update, Disney Parks said guests are getting closer to being able “to take in all the monstrous sights, tastes, and sounds of Sulley and Mike’s world” when Monstropolis opens.Disney Parks describes the area as "part celebration, part cultural exchange" intended to help "monsters understand that humans aren't so frightening after all."Meanwhile, at Disneyland in California, the long-running “Monsters, Inc.” Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! attraction is now expected to close in 2027 after park officials pushed back its closure timeline from earlier this year. Opened in 2005, the ride takes guests on a taxi tour through Monstropolis as Mike and Sulley work to return Boo safely home. The closure was initially expected to make way for a new experience inspired by “Avatar: The Way of Water,” but park officials say the updated timeline will not delay ongoing construction in the Pandora - World of Avatar area.
