The Bangaru Vaickal Neeradhara Koottamaippu, a water users and farmers’ collective has urged the Puducherry government to take up immediate repair of damaged channels and complete embankment works at Bahour lake ahead of monsoon.In a letter addressed to Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, president of the collective V. Chandrasekhar said the Bahour lake, a key water source for the region contains six irrigation channels, of which only the Seliyamedu channel is currently functional.The remaining five channels are in a deteriorated state due to lack of maintenance over the past two decades, causing serious disruption in water supply and affecting farmers’ livelihoods. The government should immediately restore all the damaged channels and ensure that they are operational before the onset of monsoon.
