A husband and wife have been identified after they both drowned while visiting a popular tourist destination in California. Dharti Patel, 29, and her husband Parth Patel, 30, died at Kings Canyon National Park in Sierra Nevada, central California, on May 25.The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victims this week, however authorities did not provide any further details.Reports based on social media accounts of the incident suggest Mrs Patel was attempting to take a photo when she slipped and fell into the icy waters, prompting Mr Patel to enter the water in an attempt to rescue her.Emergency search teams arrived to the area, witnesses reported, but were unable to save the pair who were likely pulled underwater by the strong currents. The couple was visiting from the San Francisco Bay Area over the Memorial Day weekend and had planned to stop at the popular Roaring River Falls before heading home. The National Park Service (NPS) has warned visitors not to be deceived by the apparent “calm and safe” conditions of the waterfall and said that slippery rock formations and fast moving bodies of water pose danger to visitors.“The rocks are slippery and the currents below the surface of the water can easily drag you under,” the NPS wrote on their website.“Drowning in rivers like this one is the most common cause of death in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.”One witness account shared on Facebook claimed that the conditions would have been impossible for even the most advanced swimmers. “I witnessed the incident,” the user said. “The water flow and current was too much. “Even a pro swimmer would have struggled.”
