Aerial view shows the scale of the May 20 trash slide, which left two persons dead, two injured, and one still being retrieved. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has issued a suspension order to secure retrieval operations, protect nearby families, and guide corrective measures. The landfill will only reopen once all required safety and engineering interventions are completed.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Davao Region denied claims that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the suspension of garbage collection operations in Davao City, saying the directive came from the regional office following a landfill accident.

In a statement, DENR Region XI said reports linking Marcos to the suspension order were “false and misleading.”

The agency said it issued a suspension order for the Davao City Sanitary Landfill on May 21, a day after a trash slide incident at the facility.
