The Department of Journalism of St. Aloysius Degree College in Bengaluru organised a seminar on the theme ‘Empowerment Through Media Education’ for students and aspiring media professionals on May 27 The seminar was conducted by Dr. Anna who addressed the growing influence of media and the responsible use of social media among today’s youth.Rev. Fr. Anthony Mahendran, Dr. Sandhya Panicker, and Rev. Fr. Vinoo Fabian were among those who attended the event.Addressing the gathering, Rev. Fr. Anthony Mahendran emphasised the importance of literacy and awareness in today’s digital era. He encouraged students to become responsible media users and contributors to society.During the seminar, Dr. Sr. Anna highlighted the importance of understanding, analysing, and carefully consuming social media content. She stressed that future journalists, content creators, writers, and media professionals must stand for justice and truth while dealing with the realities and challenges of the modern world.The session focused on the growing trend of citizen journalism, and the freedom enjoyed by Gen Z in creating and sharing content online. She explained that social media can have both positive and negative impact on individuals and society, depending on how people interpret and consume information.Participants discussed the negative effects of excessive social media usage among youth, including comparison of self-worth, stress, depression, and increasing loneliness. Students were encouraged to use media platforms wisely and responsibly for the betterment of society.The seminar created strong awareness among students regarding ethical media practices, and the need for critical thinking in the digital age.
