A woman who continued with her wedding despite being jilted at the altar has got engaged to her 'forever man' – nearly four years on.Kayley Stead, 30, from Swansea, Wales, was left devastated in September 2022 when her fiancé failed to turn up on their wedding day.Rather than cancel the £12,000 celebration, Kayley went ahead with the day alone, walking down the aisle, posing for photographs and celebrating with her loved ones, including her mother, Dee, just a few months before she passed away aged 65.While Kayley did not name her groom publicly, it emerged shortly after he stood her up that he was a newly qualified Gwent Police PC called Kallum Norton, who had passed out from training just days before they were meant to get married. After embracing single life, Kayley reunited with an old friend from university, Richard Perrott, 31, in February 2024 – and last week, the pair got engaged at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David campus.Kayley said she 'finally knows what true love feels like'.The insurance team manager said: 'When I think about another wedding, there is always that little devil on my shoulder reminding me that I trusted someone before and they let me down.'But Richard is different. Not only do I trust him, I trust his family too. It feels like it's always meant to be. I can just be myself and be honest – no class difference and just complete honesty.' I kept asking when we were going to get lunch because I was starving.'We stopped to look at the view and he was acting really strangely. I remember thinking, "What is he doing? He's seen all this before."'Then he said, "Back where it all began" – I joked and said, "Is this where it's going to end?"'He said he had a confession to make and told me he hadn't actually booked any food. I was horrified because I was so hungry – but then he got down on one knee.'After saying yes, Kayley spent the afternoon on FaceTime to family members while sharing a Domino's pizza with Richard. We sat and had a takeaway. Domino's will always be special to us now.'The proposal was made even more meaningful by the ring Richard chose. He had secretly arranged to give her a treasured family heirloom belonging to his grandmother. The ring is believed to be more than 65 years old and has been passed down through his family.Kayley said: 'I love antiques and things that have a story behind them. When I found out it had belonged to his nan, it meant even more.'She told me she was so glad it had gone to me. I didn't think Richard could be that thoughtful, but he really is.'The couple hope to marry in 2028. With more than 150 guests already on the list, Kayley admits finding a venue large enough for both families and all of Richard's friends may be their biggest challenge. She is also looking forward to choosing a wedding dress – but this time for a very different version of herself. She said: 'It is difficult planning for another wedding, especially the dress because I loved the first one. I've always loved lace. I'm so much more confident in myself and my body than I was before.'And I've definitely learned that finding a dress that's easy to go to the toilet in is a priority.'Reflecting on everything she has been through, Kayley says she finally understands what real love looks like. She said: 'As a young carer for my mum, I grew up believing I was only loved when I was helping other people.'That meant I often put myself last – but Richard doesn't let me do that. He encourages me to be honest, to put myself first sometimes and to say what I actually want.'So many people take advantage of that, but for the first time, I feel completely safe being myself. After everything that happened, that's all I ever really wanted.'
