Debut author Sunil Lautan has encapsulated not only the on-field struggles of the Proteas cricket team, but also the emotional toll it took on an entire nation in his book, Rising From The Choke.
Lautan, 61, of Sea Park in Port Shepstone, said he traced the raw, emotional journey of the Proteas’s 27-year odyssey – culminating in the unforgettable, atmospheric glory of the 2025 ICC World Test Series Cup.
“From the highs of the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy to the decades of ‘what-ifs and near-misses’, every South African cricket fan has felt the sting of those tears. But the story didn't end in misery. My book is a definitive account of our struggle, our resilience, and our ultimate redemption,” said Lautan.
He said the book, which took 10 months to complete, was inspired by his close following of the Proteas over the last three decades.
