Bafana Mahungela, who stands accused of killing his former high school teacher, told the court that the video footage linking him to the 2023 crime is a case of mistaken identity.

An image analyst is expected to confirm or refute the authenticity of the video footage linking 23-year-old former Sandton student, Bafana Mahungela, to the murder of his former Delta Park High School teacher, Kirsten Kluyts.

Kluyts, who was 14 weeks pregnant at the time, was discovered in October 2023, near an embankment in George Lea Park after she had participated in a local park run. The nature of her discovery, hidden among bushes and with her clothing removed, has raised significant alarm and questions surrounding the circumstances of her demise.

On Thursday, ongoing proceedings at the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, highlighted pivotal testimony from a community policing forum member regarding video footage that allegedly links Mahungela to the crime scene.

This footage, believed to be crucial evidence, reportedly shows a man, identified by witnesses as Mahungela, walking out of George Lea Park clad in a cap and a black top, and even wearing Kluyts’ T-shirt.
