Has Indian streaming reached a crime-thriller fatigue? The genre has seen so many iterations in the last five years, rehashing popular tropes to tell a different story that virtually looks and feels the same. Barring a few subversions within the same world in Kohrra and Paatal Lok, most of the shows follow a fix template and run on auto-pilot. That way, Karisma Kapoor’s Brown builds itself a bit differently in its opening episodes, taking time to establish the plot and not seeming in a hurry to unfold. Director Abhinay Deo crafts an intriguing world of characters only to later let monotony set in.Rita Brown (Karisma Kapoor) is a depressed veteran cop working on desk in Kolkata, who is attached on a high-profile murder case. A chain-smoker and an alcoholic, Brown lives with her mother (Soni Razdan) and is plagued with memories of her dead husband, played refreshingly by singer Shaan. Joining Brown on the case is the charismatic Arjun Sinha (Surya Sharma), who is recovering from the trauma of losing his wife and daughter in a car accident. Together, they look for newer clues and round-up suspects around the gritty lanes of Kolkata.
