Russia’s budding relationship with several countries in Africa, particualrly in the Sahel, has been evident in increased military and nuclear cooperation. Notwithstanding these developments, the Kremlin maintains its commitment to supporting the economic sovereignty of the continent.
This objective was highlighted again during the Russia-Africa SPIEF 2026 session, where Russia detailed plans to help Africa be self-sufficient in its agricultural sector.
To do this, Russia touted plans to work with African governments to eliminate its dependence on foreign markets for fertilizers.
Speaking during the Russia-Africa session of SPIEF 2026, Dmitry Konyaev, General Director of JSC UCC URALCHEM, emphasized that just exporting additional fertilizer to African countries is insufficient to alleviate the continent's agricultural difficulties, as seen on Sputnik.
"Simply exporting more fertilizers isn't enough to solve Africa's hunger crisis, as high logistics costs keep prices out of reach for local staple-crop farmers,” the general director stated.
