Sir, – In case it has escaped anyone’s attention, our Minister for Climate, Darragh O’Brien, is on the one hand shelling out grants for EVs to save burning fossil fuels, while at the same time removing the passenger cap to increase flying – our most heavily fossil-fuel burning form of transport – under pressure, it seems, from US airlines. – Yours, etc,CELESTINE O’REILLY,Foxrock,Dublin 18.Sir, – Your Inside Politics podcast posed the question, “Who is eligible for electric vehicle grants?” to which the answer is obvious: those who can afford the luxury of buying a new car. This policy is not only regressive in that it disproportionately benefits wealthier households at the expanse of money-poorer ones, but it shifts vital funds away from far better options such as improved public transport and better active travel infrastructure. A cynic could be forgiven for thinking this very generous EV grant scheme is more a save-the-party exercise than a save-the-planet one. – Yours, etc,JIM O’SULLIVAN,Rathedmond,Sligo.
