Bruce Bennett / Getty ImagesJune 4, 2026 Updated June 5, 2026 12:03 am EDTThe Vegas Golden Knights’ controversial challenge of a waved-off goal late in the third period of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night failed because officials felt Carolina Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen was interfered with on the play, according to the NHL’s director of officiating, Stephen Walkom.Andersen had made a diving save with his stick on Ivan Barbashev’s wraparound attempt with five minutes remaining in a game that was tied 2-2. The puck ended up crossing the goal line after Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeyev poked at the puck in the crease while Andersen scrambled to cover it.
Vegas coach John Tortorella challenged the call, but it was upheld after a video review. Walkom told a pool reporter that the video review didn’t show anything that merited reversing the call.“The ruling on the play was goaltender interference,” Walkom said. “He waved it (off) immediately. He believed that it was under the goalie and the Vegas player went after the puck and interfered with the goalie and his ability to freeze the puck and waved it off immediately.”The failed challenge resulted in a delay-of-game penalty against Vegas, and Carolina captain Jordan Staal put his team ahead 3-2 on the ensuing power play. Mark Stone replied for Vegas late to send the game to overtime, where Seth Jarvis scored to give Carolina a 4-3 win and tie the series 1-1.This story will be updated.
