Christian Petersen / Getty ImagesJune 4, 2026 11:08 pm EDT Updated PHOENIX — Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy and Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Ildemaro Vargas were both removed from Thursday’s series finale after a nasty collision at first base.With two outs in the top of the fifth, Muncy shot a grounder down the first-base line, which Vargas fielded deep in the infield. The two raced to the bag on what was a close play and hit head-on. Both players immediately fell to the ground and remained there for several minutes. Multiple trainers for both teams, along with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and D-backs manager Torey Lovullo, raced onto the field.After a lengthy pause in play, both Vargas and Muncy were eventually able to walk off the field with the help of their respective training staffs.

Pavin Smith took over at first base for Vargas.The Dodgers were able to string together a two-out rally shortly after. Ryan Ward doubled in Espinal after right-fielder Corbin Carroll misread the play. Ward scored on the next at-bat thanks to a Dalton Rushing single.This story will be updated.
