Faleata No. 2 Member of Parliament Leatinuu Wayne Sooialo has questioned the Disaster Advisory Committee’s decision to place Samoa on amber alert over fuel supplies, saying the government should instead focus on easing the burden of high fuel costs.
The former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Labour (MCIL) said he had been waiting for a Government plan to address rising fuel prices, but was surprised by the announcement of an amber alert.
“Waiting for a Government plan for the high fuel cost, but it comes to an amber alert for us,” Leatinuu wrote on his official Facebook page. Leatinuu said the Government should start by removing the Government fuel levy. “Should start with the removal of the Government fuel levy,” he said.
He also suggested that the Government subsidise bus fares so people could leave their vehicles at home and use public transportation.
“The Government should subsidise bus fares so that people can leave their cars at home and use public transportation,” he said.
