June 4 (UPI) -- A 63-year-old Oklahoma man has been charged with threatening to assault and murder a U.S. senator and his family, prosecutors announced Thursday.

A statement issued by U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma didn't specify whom David Glen Shuck is accused of threatening, but an unsealed indictment connected with the case shows the alleged target was Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Prosecutors said Shuck is charged with eight counts related to threatening to assault and murder a member of Congress and an immediate family member.

They claimed Shuck called the U.S. senator on three separate occasions in March.
