Thousands of kilometres from home, two New Zealanders are working on the front-lines of Sudan’s civil war, treating severely malnourished children and helping keep hospitals running as violence, hunger and displacement tear through the country.
Napier infectious disease specialist Malaika El Amrani and Tokoroa-born logistics team leader Grant Clark are working with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders in Sudan.
The crisis unfolding around them comes as MSF calls on countries including New Zealand to defend international humanitarian law and increase support for aid efforts as global need continues to rise.
Approximately 15 million people have been forcibly displaced since civil war broke out in Sudan in 2023, with widespread famine now declared in parts of the country.
