While the EU is preparing to host a Taliban delegation in Brussels before the summer, secondary school education for Afghan girls has been forced underground, with classes in secret schools to avoid Islamist persecution.
Just a couple of months before the diplomatic overtures, aimed at facilitating deportations back to Afghanistan, the EU’s External Action Service condemned the Taliban’s “systemic violations of women’s and girls’ rights”, warning that they “may amount to gender persecution”.
The EU itself sanctioned Taliban Education Minister Habibullah Agha in 2023 over the regime’s policy of denying girls access to education beyond the sixth grade.
