The raging unrest in boarding schools, some of which have been closed indefinitely, is getting out of hand. The authorities cannot afford to bury their heads in the sand as the problem spreads.

The surge in dormitory fires has spiralled into a national crisis. Since the tragic deaths of 16 students at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, some more schools have been shut down.

The Ministry of Education has started emergency nationwide safety audits, but public pressure is mounting for the implementation of systemic education reforms instead of resorting to reactive measures.
