Two alleged sharpshooters of the Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar gang were arrested after a late-night encounter with Panchkula police, hours after they allegedly opened fire at the owner of Swiss Lounge, Sector 5, while he was exiting the club to leave for home.Police teams collected seven empty cartridges, two live cartridges and other forensic samples. (Sant Arora/HT)The victim, Rattan Lubana, 30, a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, who also owns Da Bodega Bar & Kitchen in the same sector and De’Orra Club in Sector 26, Chandigarh, sustained bullet injuries to his left arm and back, and is said to be stable after surgery. His associate Lalit, who was with him at the time of the incident, has suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder, and is stable.Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras near the crime spot show two motorcycle-borne assailants arriving near Swiss Lounge and opening indiscriminate fire at Lubana around 12.45 am, as soon as he stepped out of the club.According to deputy commissioner of police (DCP, crime) Amrinder Singh, the district control room were alerted right after the crime and nakas were immediately set up across Panchkula. He added that after attacking the club owner, the accused went on a shooting spree with semi-automatic pistols, firing two rounds at a police team near Bella Vista in Sector 5 and three-four rounds near Nada Sahib, in a bid to escape.Police closed-in on them near the Mattawala flyover on the Yamunanagar highway and asked them to surrender but they continued firing at the personnel. At least four rounds were fired from each side before the police team overpowered the duo after shooting them in the legs. The duo was taken to the civil hospital in Sector 6 and later referred to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.The accused have been identified as Jaswinder Singh, 34, a resident of Ludhiana, and Harpreet Singh alias Happy, a resident of Hoshiarpur. Police sources said two criminal cases are already registered against Jaswinder, while Harpreet’s criminal background is being verified. Police have recovered two semi-automatic 9mm pistols—a Glock and a Zigana – and the Pulsar motorcycle used in the crime from their possession. Police teams also collected seven empty cartridges, two live cartridges and other forensic samples.‘Sent by Godara to kill Lubana’Police claimed that during their initial disclosure, both accused admitted that they had been sent by gangster Godara to eliminate Lubana. Police have registered two separate FIRs against the accused. One pertains to the attack on Lubana, which has been registered at Sector 5 police station, while the second concerns the firing on the police party, which has been registered at Chandimandir police station, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.DCP Singh said police would seek the custody of the accused after their discharge from hospital. Investigators are also going over the CCTV footage from the past several days to identify individuals who may have assisted the shooters with reconnaissance and logistical support.Threats, explosion outside victim’s 2nd club in pastThe victim is the younger brother of former Ward 1 councillor Narinder Pal Singh Lubana. Narinder’s wife Paramjit Kaur won from ward 1 in the recently concluded municipal corporation elections. Narinder said his brother is married and has a one-year-old daughter.He alleged that his brother had received several threat calls over the years and had submitted complaints to Chandigarh Police too, however, no security cover was provided. This even as a blast had occurred outside his other club, De’Orra Club in November 2024. Police are examining whether there is a connection between the blast and the latest attack.Family members also claimed that while they were at PGIMER, they got a call from an international number. The caller identified himself as Rohit Godara and inquired about the number of bullets that had hit Lubana. The caller told the family that Lubana had been providing financial support worth crores of rupees to their rivals and warned that he would have to die “either today or tomorrow”. Police are verifying the claim as part of their investigation.Narinder rejected the allegations that Lubana had been helping Godara’s rival gangs.
